Sports Betting: A Summary of How Indiana Flipped the Switch

Eran McGregory gives us an insight into the Indiana sports betting environment and how it may look in the future.

September 1, 2019; that was the day the state changed the game forever in Indiana. Sports gambling was finally legalized in the state of Indiana. Governor Eric Holcomb signed a bill that would legalize sports betting in the state of Indiana; he also placed a bet at the Indiana Grand racing & Casino in Shelbyville,Indiana. This decision was so huge for hoosiers all around the state because they have the opportunity to make some money and feel good doing it. In the state of Indiana, there are about 15 casinos in the whole state alone; The governor decided to do this because he wanted more money for the state so he could tax it; that way, money would start flowing throughout the state and he did it at the right time around football season last year.

If you live in Indiana and if you feel like you don’t want to go to the casino, there are other ways you could do sports betting legally. Here are some of the sports betting apps that you could legalize betting on in Indiana; Draftkings, Fanduel, BetRivers, BetAmerica, BetMGM, PointsBet, and Caesars Sportsbook. As far as what you can bet on, you could bet on any sport in the state including football, basketball, baseball, hockey, golf, and soccer. You can also bet on international sports as well(cricket and rugby); it gives fans the opportunity to bet on anything they want to bet on, you have that freedom now to do that in the state of Indiana and make as much money as you want. You can make money either way on an app or at a casino; either way, you are making money legally and governor Holcomb did everybody a favor by doing that, the governor is all about making money for the state and would do anything to bring more money for his state; supply and demand.

When the governor made sports betting legal laws, people were excited because they finally got to bet on sports games the way they want to. Ever since the coronavirus hit, people are betting more now on the apps than ever before. Now, before the virus came; sports betting in Indiana took off like a rocket last year; estimating 127 million statewide and even made more money from the apps. COVID-19 took over in March and casinos were closed down until further notice, sports was put on hold and made life even more complicated without sports; casinos are starting to open back up and taking more safety procedures as much as they can to avoid this situation occurring again, it won’t be as much busier than it was. The good news is sports is back and July is going to be the busiest that has ever been.

Back in October 2019; in person-sports betting regulated casinos to have operators planning on using mobile betting apps. They only had 10 out of 13 regulated casinos in Indiana that were doing in person sports betting; but at that time it was yet to be determined when the launch dates occurred. Indiana laws are stagnant when it comes to betting; you have to make sure to check on any online sports books before you start, the offshore books are illegal in the state and you could be penalized and get criminal charges if you don’t know the rules of the law when it comes to betting; you can serve a lot of jail time for that. DraftKings, FanDuel, BetRivers, BetAmerica, and Caesars are the only active online sportsbooks in Indiana right now. Bet Indiana Podcast and BetIndiana News are the only source for betting information and updated news on sports gaming.

I think everything will stay the same with betting in Indiana; when it comes to going to casinos, things will change because of safety procedures like social distancing, washing your hands, etc. Betting apps are going to grow largely; meaning that the COVID-19 hit so bad, people have the opportunity to make more money on those apps without even having to go to the casino. That’s fine for a lot of people because they are trying to avoid getting the COVID-19 disease; betting apps are a stepping stone for people that want to place bets in the safety of their home during this crisis. There are some sports that have been back; UFC, boxing, and soccer are the only sports that are being played right now. NHL, MLS, NBA, MLB are coming back in July; as far as college football and the NFL are concerned, things are still being played out because cases are going up in a lot of states and that might be a resurgence in the fall.

Lastly, play props and DFS are going to be so popular because of the coronavirus pandemic; you have to understand if you are an athlete, months and months and months; players are anxious to be back in their respective leagues. I know for a fact that every sports league around the country is needed right now, everything that has been going on around the country when it comes to the protests that you see on television and racial injustice; sports play a pivotal role in people’s lives. Honestly without sports; life would be pretty boring and nothing is more exciting when you see your favorite team, player play for pride and sports does that. I’m glad that sports are coming back in July and it’s great for the country despite what everything is going on; if sports was not played this year, a lot of revenue will be lost on the leagues and sports betters might have to get a full-time job to pay bills; they make a living off betting. Overall, we’ll have to wait and see what is going to happen in the month of July; if things planned out and everything goes well according to plan, sports is here to stay; no matter what pandemic we’re in.
